Work teams are formal groups consisting of small numbers of people hopefully with complementary skills that are committed to a common set of work goals. Team members decide on the approach, for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993).
Work teams perform better than individuals acting in isolation when the work is complex (rather than standardised) and the tasks interdependent. Hence a successful team must have members who are competent in both technical and interpersonal aspects of the work and who are also suited to the role they play in the team.
In business teams we talk about who is ‘on the bus’ and who is not ‘on the bus’. When we get all the right people ‘on the bus’ and the wrong people ‘off the bus’ we can then decide on the destination or strategic direction.
